AI responses explained
Settings → AI responses is where you take control of specific answers instead of letting the model improvise. Two kinds exist.
Canned versus smart
| Canned response | Smart response | |
|---|---|---|
| What the visitor gets | Exactly the text you wrote | An AI answer written from your context |
| Speed | Instant | Normal AI reply time |
| Consistency | Identical every time | Varies with the question |
| Best for | Contact details, policies, legal wording | Company background, nuanced explanations |
Both are switched per response with Enable Smart Response. Off means canned.
Use canned wherever a wrong word costs money: contact routes, returns, guarantees. Use smart where a single fixed paragraph would feel robotic.
Getting started
Click Initialize Defaults on a new chatbot. Mikabot creates the standard set in every active language, and you edit from there instead of starting blank.
The Situation field
Every response has Situations to Use This Response. This short line is what the AI reads when deciding whether your response applies. It is the single most important field on the form.
Write it as a purpose, in a few words:
- for human handoff requests
- for frustrated users
- for questions about delivery times
Avoid overlap. Two responses with near-identical situations make the choice unpredictable.
The default responses
| Response | Fires when |
|---|---|
| Contact info | The visitor asks for a human |
| Frustrated user | The visitor is unhappy with the bot |
| Website info | Questions about your company, team, or services |
| Shop info | Shop, delivery, and pre-sales questions |
| Order info | Questions about an existing order |
| No products available | Nothing in the catalog matches |
| Email confirmation | A visitor leaves their email address |
Shop info and Order info are only active when Enable ecommerce is on.
Writing your own
- Click Add New Response
- Give it a Description for your team
- Decide canned or smart
- Fill in Situations to Use This Response
- For a smart response, write the Context Information — the facts the AI should build the answer from
- Write the text for each active language
- Save
Generating context from a page
Smart responses have a From Page field. Enter a URL, click Read and generate context from URL, and Mikabot reads that page and drafts the context for you.
Use it for shipping, returns, or warranty pages. Always read the generated text before saving — it is a draft, not a verdict, and it will not notice that a page is out of date.
Managing responses
- Enabled / Disabled — switch a response off without deleting it. Useful for seasonal messages.
- Reset to Default — restore Mikabot’s original wording for a standard response
- Translated — marks which languages have been filled in
- Delete — only available for responses you created
A missing translation falls back to English, so a visitor writing in Dutch may get an English answer. Fill every active language.
Testing
After each change, ask the triggering question on the Demo page in every active language. Check that the right response fires, and that no placeholder braces are showing.
